Geophysics Section
© Abteilung Geophysik, IfGeo, Uni Bonn
Research foci of the Geophysics Section at the University of Bonn comprise geophysical imaging methods, modeling of coupled flow and transport processes in porous and fractured media, and integration of process models and geophysical data through petrophysical models.
The applications in these areas are manifold and include:
- the characterisation of soils and aquifers
- the monitoring of flow, transport and biogeochemical processes in the subsurface in the context of wate management
- the characterisation and remediation of contaminated sites, soil-root interactions
- the characterisation of permafrost, extended geothermal systems, mud volcanoes and slope (in)stabilities

Field exercise in hydrogeophysics in the Vulkaneifel Geopark (Module M84 / pea833)
From 4 to 7 June 2026, the field course in the Hydrogeophysics module (M84 / pea833) will take place in the Vulkaneifel Geopark under the direction of Prof. Dr. Andreas Kemna, Maximilian Weigand and Joost Hase.
Christmas lecture in module PEA735 – Electrical Imaging
The module “Electrical Imaging” (Master’s program PEA https://www.ifgeo.uni-bonn.de/en/study/study-mug/master-pea) covers the theoretical fundamentals of geoelectrical methods in geophysics. While the emphasis is on the mathematical description of the underlying physics, we turned to a hands‑on activity just before Christmas.
Presentation on meteorology and geophysics at the 25th Schnupper-Uni – join in!
The University of Bonn invites all female students in grades 10 to 13 to attend the 25th Schnupper-Uni for Female Students on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, offering exciting insights into the worlds of astronomy, biology, chemistry, geodesy and geoinformation, geosciences, computer science, mathematics, meteorology and geophysics, molecular biomedicine, pharmacy and physics.
Inaugural lecture on deep earthquakes as a mystery from the depths by Prof. Marcel
At the Dies Academicus of the 2025/26 winter semester, Prof. Marcel Thielmann presented the current theories and hypotheses on deep earthquakes in his lecture and explained how modern computer simulations can help to understand the physical processes responsible for these phenomena.
