As part of the PROMOS scholarship programme, Master's students led by Jun.-Prof. Leonie Esters undertook a one-week, partially funded study trip to Uppsala to expand existing research collaborations in climatology. The scientists and doctoral students at Uppsala University's Geocentrum warmly welcomed the participants and facilitated exchanges with Swedish students.
A particular highlight was participating in the daily collection of meteorological data in the morning, initiated by Anders Celsius. The students not only gained insight into the long series of measurements, which are invaluable for today's climate research, but were also able to continue this tradition on site. In the Carolina Rediviva library at Uppsala University, they were also able to view the original meteorological records handwritten by Celsius in the 18th century – a rare and impressive experience that brought the historical context of their field of study to life.
A varied supporting programme also offered the opportunity to immerse oneself in student life and the traditions of Sweden's oldest university, with cultural activities rounding off the trip.
The excursion impressively demonstrated how valuable international cooperation is for the education of young scientists – and how inspiring the combination of historical research tradition and modern climate science can be.
