Through her work, she not only shapes the training of future climate scientists, but also raises awareness of the importance of evidence-based climate research in our society. In doing so, she deliberately takes students beyond the traditional lecture setting, for example through field trips, practical teaching methods and a strong focus on international collaboration. Her courses encourage students to look beyond the confines of their discipline and to consider their social responsibilities.

The 2025 Teaching Award from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has been awarded to Leonie Esters, Assistant Professor of Climate Monitoring – she epitomises a new generation of academic teaching: dedicated, innovative and making a positive impact on society.
