The Climate Monitoring Research Group, together with students and led by Junior Professor Leonie Esters, had the unique opportunity to visit the new German research vessel METEOR IV, which is currently in the final stages of construction.

During an extensive guided tour, the participants gained insight into the 125-meter-long vessel and explored numerous areas that will no longer be accessible once construction is completed. Of particular interest to the Climate Monitoring Research Group were the scientific facilities on board, including an atmospheric chemistry laboratory and a bow platform designed for atmospheric measurements.

The METEOR IV will replace the current METEOR and will also assume the tasks of the research vessel POSEIDON, which was decommissioned in 2019. Completion of the new vessel is scheduled for the end of 2027. The ship is being built on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), will be operated by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, and managed by BRIESE RESEARCH.
