As part of Science Day, pupils from Beethoven Gymnasium Bonn visited the Geophysics Department of the Institute of Geosciences today, accompanied by their physics teacher, to gain exciting insights into the world of Earth system physics. Under expert guidance, the pupils learned more about the propagation and measurement of earthquakes and about the technology used in seismology and seismic science to study the Earth. Through practical experiments, the pupils were able to generate and measure seismic waves themselves, giving them a better understanding of the mechanisms and significance of geophysics as a discipline. The visit was a complete success and encouraged the students to further deepen their interest in the natural sciences and to look beyond traditional school subjects when choosing their field of study: geophysics and meteorology are hands-on physics!
