How are silicic plutonic and volcanic systems related? Are their formation processes and storage conditions similar? If so, what leads one system to erupt catastrophically, while the other solidifies slowly in Earth's crust?
As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bonn, I am working on understanding the connection between these two systems using petrological and geochemical tools. A current interest of mine is applying diffusion modeling in minerals to receive insight into the time silicic magmas spend near their solidus in a crystal-rich state and how much time it takes to rejuvenate such systems prior to eruption. Additionally, I am interested in using isotopes (Rb-Sr) to receive information on magma petrogenesis in the upper crust (e.g. crustal assimilation) and the mechanisms that lead to eruption.
