Publication Record

I have published about 220 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals and as book chapters. Six of these papers appeared in Science (the first one in 1988 and the last one in 2021) and one in Nature; I am the first or senior author of all seven. I have edited or co-edited four books and written one textbook. I have also published numerous non-technical papers. See separate list of publications for details.

My papers are highly cited in the field (about 8500 citations according to the latest statistics from Google Scholar), and my h-index of 53 (Google Scholar) is among the highest of any German paleontologist and the highest among German vertebrate paleontologists.

Supervision of Graduate Students and Hosting of Postdocs and Visiting Professors

I have hosted 14 postdoctoral researchers, primarily funded by the DFG and the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation. I have also supervised 26 Ph.D. students, the first of whom obtained his degree in 2000. My first Diploma (M.Sc. equivalent) student graduated in 1995. Since then I have supervised 61 additional Diploma and M.Sc. students, many of whom went on to American, Canadian and European universities to pursue their Ph.D. degrees. Finally, I have supervised 18 B.Sc. student theses. BSc theses were newly introduced to the University of Bonn in 2010.

Many of my students and postdocs have come from around the world (Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil 2x, Canada, Chile, China 2x, France 4x, India, Italy 3x, Japan 2x, Luxemburg 2x, Poland 2x, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, The Netherlands 5x, United Kingdom, USA). Currently my lab hosts four postdocs, five Ph.D. students, and five M.Sc. students. The great majority of the student’s theses have resulted in publications in international, peer-reviewed journals. I am proud and pleased that many of my former students and postdocs are still active in the field, including 15 who hold professorships or other professional positions in paleontology around the world: Dr. Alexandra Houssaye (Paris, France), Prof. Jörg Fröbisch (Berlin, Germany), Prof. Nadia Fröbisch (Berlin, Germany), Prof. Shoji Hayashi (Okajama, Japan), Prof. Walter Joyce (Fribourg, Switzerland), Prof. Liu Jun (Hefei, China), Prof. Yasuhisa Nakajima (Tokyo, Japan), Prof. Adun Samathi (Mahasarakham, Thailand), Prof. Lars Schmitz (Claremont Colleges, USA), Dr. Ragna Redelstorff, (Cape Town, South Africa), PD Dr. Torsten Scheyer (Zurich, Switzerland), Dr. Frederik Spindler (Denkendorf, Germany), Dr. Anneke van Heteren (Munich, Germany), Dr. Oliver Wings (Bayreuth, Germany), Prof. Yang Tzu-Ruei (Taipei, Taiwan). I am also very proud that some have won prestigious prizes. Finally, I frequently participate as an external examiner in Ph.D. defenses in many European countries, the USA, and Canada.

Fieldwork

I have led the following field campaigns, at least 5 days in duration (but usually much longer), listed by date first conducted:

  • 2022 (planned): Reconnaissance fieldwork in the Early and Middle Triassic marine formations of the Arctic island of Spitsbergen, directed at giant ichthyosaurs
  • 2021: High Alpine reconnaissance fieldwork focussed on Late Triassic marine vertebrates, specifically giant ichthyosaurs, in the Kössen Formation of eastern Switzerland (Schesaplana Mountain, Crachenhorn Mountain near Davos) together with Dr. Torsten Scheyer (University of Zurich, Switzerland)
  • 2019: Reconnaissance fieldwork in the Late Triassic Pardonet Formation of northern British Columbia, Canada, directed at giant ichthyosaurs
  • 2019: Reconnaissance fieldwork in the Late Triassic of the French Pacific department of New Caledonia, directed at giant ichthyosaurs
  • 2016: Late Cretaceous extensional basins of southen and eastern China to study oviraptor dinosaur reproductive biology. The fieldwork was conducted together with Dr. Yang Tzu-Ruei (Taiwan National Museum of Natural History).
  • 2016, 2018, 2019: Early Triassic of Anhui, eastern China, yielding some of the earliest Triassic marine reptiles. The fieldwork was conducted together with Dr. Liu Jun (Hefei University of Technology, Hefei, China).
  • 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 (planned): Rhaetian of Bonenburg, eastern Westphalia, Germany: Excavation of a classical bonebed at the Triassic/Jurassic boundary including dinosaurs. The work was performed under under the leadership of Dr. Tanja Wintrich in 2017, 2018, and 2019
  • 2013: Reconnaissance fieldwork in the Triassic and Jurassic of Xinjiang, China. The work was focused on Middle and Late Jurassic dinosaur localities of the Jungar and Turfan-Hami basins and was conducted together with my Bonn collegue Prof. Thomas Martin and Prof. Sun Ge of Jilin University, China.
  • 2010, 2011: Lower Permian of North Texas, recovery of pelycosaur material for the Bonn collections and for histological study, together with Dr. Koen Stein and Christen Shelton
  • 2005: Middle Triassic of Winterswijk, The Netherlands, collecting of marine reptile fossil and terrestrial reptile trackways. The work has been continued under the leadership of Dr. Nicole Klein until 2014 and since then by Dutch collegues Dr. Jelle Reumer and Dr. Anne Schulp of the University of Utrecht.
  • 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2018, 2019: Middle Triassic of Guizhou, SW China, faunal content, sedimentology, and taphonomy of the different marine reptile localities in the region. This fieldwork is physically very demanding because of the endurance required in accessing the excavation sites by hiking and working in changing weather conditions from very hot to very cold. Accomodation is in tents, and the nearest town can be reached by dirt road in two hours.
  • 1988: Late Triassic Plateosaurus bonebed in Frick, Switzerland, excavation in the dinosaur bonebed for taphonomic data collecting. Since 2007, I have been the scientific advisor to the annual excavation campaigns of the Sauriermusem Frick and the Cantone Aargau.

Media Appearances

Needless to say, studying dinosaurs and other large extinct creatures has led to numerous media appearances, as a search of the internet will quickly reveal. I have appeared on very many occasions in TV and radio shows in different countries, beginning in 1988 on Swiss national TV.

There have also been very many print media articles about my work and that of the DFG Research Units 533 and 2685, the large coordinated DFG projects I have been leading for the last 18 years. Highlights arguably were articles in Germany's leading news magazine Der Spiegel in 2006, the British New Scientist in 2009, the New York Times in 2011 and 2021, and CNN in 2021. I believe talking to the media is very important, and I have always made time for journalists seeking information.

Appearances in the digital media include the Science TV project of the DFG for which Research Unit 533 was chosen in 2007 together with nine other projects during the pilot phase. We contributed footage for 12 episodes which were then turned into professionally produced 3-minute videos in German and English.

My research on fossilization also receives extensive reporting by the media. Our outreach activities are also evidenced by an average of six press releases per year from my group through the University of Bonn and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
